GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — The Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir said Wednesday it condemns “any attack against Muslims whatever the reason,” after militants killed 16 Egyptian soldiers in the Sinai.
Ibrahim al-Shiref, a Hizb ut-Tahrir spokesman, said the attack was being used “to incite against Palestinians and create division between Egypt and Gaza in the interests of Israel.”
Al-Shiref said in a statement that the Egyptian military leadership should be held responsible for failing to protect the soldiers, and he called on the army to focus on controlling Sinai rather than closing Gaza.
Egypt closed the Rafah crossings into Gaza as a response to the attacks, and authorities have vaguely blamed Palestinians for the incident targeting a checkpoint in el-Arish.
